As a result, five students sustained severe injuries, while several others suffered minor wounds. The injured students were rushed to Bawku’s Quality and Vineyard hospitals for treatment after the Bawku Divisional Police Command quickly intervened to restore order. In spite of the disruption, authorities at the school and the Ghana Education Service (GES) continued with the ceremony, which was successfully completed with the help of senior prefects from both institutions.
This latest development occurs just 72 hours after a similar incident that resulted in the expulsion of students from Sokode Senior High Technical School in the Volta Region. On Sunday, February 23, the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) issued the directive in response to violent clashes between students and locals that left multiple people injured. Some students were reportedly attacked after venturing into the community to purchase food, according to reports.
They organized their peers for an attack in retaliation. However, upon returning to campus, they were ambushed by a group of local youths and the Asafo Company, leading to further injuries and property damage, including the destruction of a staff member’s vehicle.
