Dr Bawumia slams Prez Mahama for unfair dismissals, raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former vice president, has criticized President John Mahama’s decision to revoke appointments and recruitment made by the previous administration after December 7, 2024. He claims that this directive is “unfair” and goes against the NDC’s campaign pledge to provide employment opportunities for all Ghanaians. Dr. Bawumia called on the President to focus on creating new jobs rather than terminating appointments in a post he made on Facebook on Wednesday, February 19. In the post, he expressed concern over what he described as unfortunate dismissals that were motivated by politics.

He noted:

Regrettably, directors who are not politicians but rather public servants have also been let go. As if to suggest that the individuals whose livelihoods were destroyed cannot lead independent professional lives, regardless of their qualifications, in some instances, the sole reason for dismissal was that the individuals were known to or related to politicians. Additionally, there are reports that the government intends to revoke the appointments of critical employees, such as teachers, nurses, and security guards, because they were made during the previous administration. That would be extremely regrettable. Dr. Bawumia also criticized President Mahama for the recent military raid on Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence, comparing it to a military regime. In addition, the attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, and mobs attacking innocent people and state institutions all contribute to the overall sense of unease.

This more closely resembles a military takeover than a peaceful transition to democracy. These are guaranteed. It is a worrying time for our democracy, and Ghana’s progress will benefit more from swift action to safeguard democratic practices and institutions. Therefore, the former vice president urged President Mahama to act as a president for all Ghanaians by halting these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and safeguarding all citizens
