Parliament reshuffles committees to adhere to leadership changes

The reorganization of Parliament’s Appointments Committee along with Business Committee and Committee of Selection occurred after leadership transitions and ministerial appointments in Parliament.

The committee reorganization continues to apply both Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament to adapt committee membership according to present parliamentary distribution.

The Committee of Selection performed this exercise to match the current House configuration through its role in committee composition determination. The committee followed an assessment of the existing strengths between the Majority and Minority Caucuses while maintaining a balance of fairness and inclusiveness in their examinations. The restructuring of committees required changes due to the new ministerial appointments of selected members along with changes in the leadership of the Majority Caucus.

Based on official parliamentary positions the Ghanaian political system assigns specific committee roles to its members including the Majority Leader alongside the Deputy Majority Leader and the Chief Whip.

The current parliamentary make-up consists of 183 members for the Majority Caucus and 88 members for the Minority Caucus while four members continue to remain independent from both groups. The membership of Independent Members joining the Majority Caucus now makes the parliamentary numbers 187 for the Majority while the Minority runs at 88.

Standing Order 210 led the Committee of Selection to finish its reorganization process since it requires committee leadership appointments to mirror Parliamentary party strength.

The House now reviews an amended member list of committees which represents a major advancement in maintaining legislative body operation following political developments.
