Meet Ghana’s new IGP: Everything you must know about COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been appointed as Ghana’s new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He replaces Dr George Akuffo Dampare, who was appointed to the role by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

A statement signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and dated Thursday, 13 March, stated:

COP Yohonu brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernisation and transformation of the Ghana Police Service.

COP Yohonu began his academic career at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, where he earned his WASSCE diploma. After that, he went to the University of Ghana to earn a Bachelor’s degree, and then he went to the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA) to earn an Executive MBA in Project Management. Christian began his career as a police officer in 1985 when he became a recruit for the Ghana Police Service. His rapid ascent through the ranks reflected his dedication and ability to apply both academic knowledge and practical skills to real-world policing challenges.
On the international stage, his expertise sets him apart, having participated in two significant United Nations peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and East Timor, where he made invaluable contributions to global security efforts.
HCOP Yohuno was the Divisional Commander for Accra Central from 2007 to 2009, where he handled difficult policing issues with poise and efficiency. In 2011, he received the prestigious Grand Medal, one of Ghana’s highest civilian honors, for his dedication to combating armed robbery and violent crime. His promotion to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) by 2012 was the result of his growing influence in law enforcement. After that, in 2015, he was given the position of Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD). In this position, he was in charge of important reforms that significantly reduced the number of accidents on the road. His leadership continued to gain recognition, and in 2016, he was promoted to Commissioner of Police (COP), later assuming the role of Director-General for Special Duties and Administration.When COP Yohuno was made Deputy IGP for Operations on July 17, 2024, he reached a career high and was at the forefront of important national security initiatives. With his most recent appointment as Inspector General of Police on March 12, 2025, COP Yohuno has finally reached the pinnacle of his professional life.Bis most recent appointment, on July 17, 2024, was as Deputy IGP for Operations, which sparked controversy ahead of the 2024 general election and drew mixed reactions. Christian, who is married and has children, is devoted to his family in addition to his professional accomplishments. He finds balance and inspiration in his hobbies, which include reading, football, athletics, music, and reading.
