Driver unions announce a significant cut in transportation fares, providing commuters with relief.

Commuters can finally breathe a short sigh of relief after months of suffering constant increases in transportation costs. This comes after commercial driver unions announced that, as of Saturday, May 24, 2025, transportation fares would be reduced by 15%.

Following a meeting with the Ministry of Transportation on Monday, May 19, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced the decision.

The reduction is a reaction to the recent slight drop in fuel prices and the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar, said Abass Imoro, the GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, in an interview with TV3.

He stated:

We look at the fuel, which has been reduced by 18%, and if we are to follow the tradition at the Ministry of Transport, we would have to reduce fares by only one-third of the 18% reduction in fuel. Spare parts they have promised to reduce prices, but this has not yet happened”.

As we speak today, lubricants remain at the same price. Documentation such as permits, taxes, and DVLA charges have also not changed. However, we see this fare reduction as our contribution towards resetting Ghana, and that’s why we’ve taken this initiative”.

In response to a query about implementing the cut, Mr. Imoro cautioned commuters against getting into physical altercations with disobedient drivers. He advised travelers to report such incidents to the closest police station instead.
